Board of Directors of the Mexican Herpetological Society 2023 - 2025

PRESIDENT Dr. Oscar Flores Villela

He graduated from the Faculty of Sciences at UNAM (1991) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, USA (1994-1996). He has published several articles in international journals, educational publications, science dissemination, and book chapters. He has authored, co-authored, or edited 12 books and is a member of the National System of Researchers. He has taught over 120 undergraduate and graduate courses at UNAM, various provincial universities, and abroad, and has delivered over 140 lectures in Mexico and abroad. He was the founder and curator of the amphibian and reptile collection at the Faculty of Sciences, UNAM. He was also one of the first promoters and founders of the Mexican Herpetological Society. He has served as Vice President, President, and Editor of the same society. He was a candidate for the National University Award for Young Academics in 1992. In 2008, he was elected as an "Honorary Foreign Member" by the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists; this is a lifelong distinction.

VICE PRESIDENT Dr. Ana Gatica

She was born in Tijuana, Baja California, is a Biologist, and holds a master's degree in Arid Zone Management from the Faculty of Sciences at the Autonomous University of Baja California. She pursued her Ph.D. at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, focusing on Natural Resources. She holds a Diploma in Herpetology from the Mexican Herpetological Society and UNAM. She has been working as a professor-researcher at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez since 1997 and was a founding member of the Biology Program. Currently, she teaches courses on chordate biology, field biology, and arid zone management. She has supervised and co-supervised around 100 theses (undergraduate and graduate), has 48 publications in national and international journals, five book chapters, and has participated in national and international congresses. She has received support from CONABIO-CONANP for three projects. Additionally, she engages in outreach activities. Her main interest group is reptiles, and she enjoys hiking and photographing nature.

SECRETARY Dr. Julian A. Velasco

He is a Full-time Researcher A at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Dr. Velasco graduated in Biology from the University of Valle in Cali, Colombia (2003) and completed his Ph.D. studies at the Institute of Biology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (2015). His research focuses on understanding the role of current and past climate in generating biodiversity at different spatial and temporal scales using a conceptual and methodological integration of macroecology and macroevolution. He uses various ecological modeling tools, including ecological niche modeling, geographic information systems, and comparative phylogenetic methods. He has been a member of the National Researchers System level 1 since 2017. To date, he has published 54 scientific articles, seven book chapters, and eight books. His favorite group of organisms is lizards of the genus Anolis.

TREASURER Dr. Uri Omar García Vázquez

He is a Full-time Professor B at the Faculty of Higher Studies Zaragoza of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Dr. García graduated in Biology from the Autonomous University of Puebla, and completed his master's and doctoral studies at the Faculty of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. His research focuses on studying the evolutionary, biogeographical, and species boundary relationships in the herpetofauna of Mesoamerica. He uses various tools such as Sanger sequencing, genomics, and morphological studies in his research. He is a member of the National Researchers System level 1. To date, he has published more than 50 scientific articles, 17 book chapters, and a book. Additionally, he has supervised around 40 theses (undergraduate and graduate).

NORTHERN REPRESENTATIVE Dr. David Ramiro Aguillón Gutiérrez

He is a Veterinary Surgeon (Autonomous University of Nuevo León, Mexico), Specialist in Occupational Health (Autonomous University of the Northeast, Mexico), Master of Biological Sciences with a specialization in Embryology, and Doctor of Biological Sciences with a specialization in Embryology and Zoology (Moscow State University M. V. Lomonosov, Russia), Postdoctoral in Biodiversity and Conservation (Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo, Mexico). He currently heads the Bioindicators Laboratory at the Research Center and Ethnobiological Garden of the Autonomous University of Coahuila, Mexico. He is a member of the National Researchers System of CONAHCYT level I.

SOUTHERN REPRESENTATIVE Dr. Pierre A.R.R.H. Charruau

Dr. Pierre A.R.R.H. Charruau earned his Ph.D. in Ecology and Sustainable Development from El Colegio de la Frontera Sur in 2010. He conducted his undergraduate and master's studies at various universities in France from 1998 to 2003. He is currently an Associate Researcher B in the Department of Biodiversity Conservation at El Colegio de la Frontera Sur, Villahermosa Unit (Tabasco, Mexico) since May 2023. Dr. Charruau has been involved in 14 scientific projects in France and Mexico and has authored numerous publications and book chapters. He is a member of several research organizations and editorial boards.

CENTRAL REPRESENTATIVE M. en C. Rodrigo Gabriel Martinez Fuentes

M. en C. Rodrigo Gabriel Martinez Fuentes graduated from the Biology program at the Faculty of Higher Studies Zaragoza of UNAM. He is interested in the systematic study, taxonomy, ecology, and conservation of amphibians and reptiles in Mexico and Central America. He has authored and co-authored various scientific articles on these vertebrates and has participated as an instructor in workshops on the management of venomous reptiles and the prevention of snakebites. He is a member of the Mexican Herpetological Society since 2016.

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER Biol. Tania Verónica Zamudio Torres

Biol. Tania Verónica Zamudio Torres, a graduate of the Faculty of Sciences, UNAM, has been a member of the Mexican Herpetological Society since 2023. She is currently completing her master's studies in biological sciences with a focus on the ecology and conservation of amphibians and reptiles. Her research interests include amphibian bioacoustics and the microbiome of amphibians. She actively participates in science outreach activities and fieldwork in fragmented environments.
