About Us

Created in 1986, the Mexican Herpetological Society is a non-profit organization that brings together professors, researchers, students and the general public who are interested in the knowledge and conservation of Mexican and Latin American amphibians and reptiles.

History

In 1986, as a result of the concern of a small group of herpetologists and students interested in the study of amphibians and reptiles, the "National Herpetological Committee" was founded. Its objective was to contribute to the dissemination of scientific knowledge of this group of vertebrates that inhabit our country, as well as to promote interest in these organisms among students. After the formation of this group, a meeting was organized in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, in 1986. This was the first opportunity to present papers on herpetology, as well as to get to know the few people interested in these animals in a closer way. A second meeting was held in 1987, in conjunction with the Society for the Study of Amphibians (SSAR) and Reptiles and the Herpetologists League (HL), in the Port of Veracruz. The Sociedad Herpetológica Mexicana A.C. (SHM) was founded in 1988 as a non-governmental, non-profit organization. The first board of directors was integrated by: President, Zeferino Uribe Peña; Vice President, Oscar Alberto Flores Villela; Secretary, Miriam Benabib Nisenbaum; Treasurer, Lucía Saldaña de la Riva; Vocal from the North, Arturo Contreras Arquieta; Vocal from the South, Carlos Guichard Romero; Vocal from the Center, Rubén Castro Franco and Enrique Godínez Cano.
